Frequently Asked Questions

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), a prescription medicine, is a purified protein that temporarily improves the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the brows in adults younger than 65 years of age.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a healthcare professional as a simple, nonsurgical treatment that is injected directly into the muscles between the brows. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes persistent lines to form between the brows.

Where can BOTOX® Cosmetic be used?
The most common treatment areas include the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal lines that run across the forehead, and the crow’s feet around the outer eyes. Regular use will soften expression lines and help to stop further deepening of lines.

Facts about BOTOX® Cosmetic:
BOTOX® Cosmetic, introduced in 2002, is the first botulinum toxin to be approved by the FDA for stubborn frown lines between the brows.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the most popular of all physician-administered non-surgical aesthetic procedures for seven years running.

Approximately 11.8 million BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures have been administered in the United States since 2002. Ninety seven percent of 117 patients surveyed were satisfied with the results of their BOTOX® Cosmetic experience.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
BOTOX® works by paralyzing the muscles in your face. Skin that cannot move cannot form lines and wrinkles. When BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

What can I expect in Recovery / Post Op?
The ability to return to work or normal activity is almost always immediate. There is usually little or no bruising, bleeding, pain, or other such discomforts. Touching or massaging treated areas should be avoided as this could disrupt the placement. The effects of injection usually last between 3 and 4 months.

Will my face still have expression?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced physician who will be able to determine the right dose and injection technique for you, you can still smile, frown and be expressive. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of your facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

How long does a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment take?
The procedure is quick, simple and there is no down time. Following a facial analysis by your physician and a discussion on your desired outcome, the procedure itself only takes about 10-15 minutes, depending upon the amount injected and number of desired treatment areas.

How Quickly Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?
You may see the effects of BOTOX® as early as 1-2 days after treatment or as late as 2 weeks after. Typically, it takes 4-5 days for a full response.

How much does a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment cost?
The cost depends on the amount of product needed. As an example, treating frown lines between the eyebrows typically costs between $300 - $600 depending on the size of the area and the depth of the lines. Since the results generally last up to four months, it works out to less than $5 per day.

Who should not use this treatment?
There are very few restrictions regarding BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. Those who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurological disease should not be treated with BOTOX®. Patients should discuss with their physician if BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments are appropriate for them.

Can BOTOX® Cosmetic be used for other medical conditions?
Many people may be surprised to know there are two types of BOTOX®. BOTOX® is used for the treatment of serious medical conditions, while BOTOX® Cosmetic is used in much smaller dosages for the treatment of facial wrinkles and lines. BOTOX® and BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be confused as they are used to treat different conditions, using very different dosages.

What are the other uses of BOTOX®?

  1. Headaches
    • tension headaches
    • migraine headaches
  2. Hemifacial spasms
  3. Hyperhidrosis (sweating)
    • axillary
    • palmar
  4. Aging Neck
